Hands-on workshops and tutoring for homeschool students

Hello, we're Mike & Linda.

My wife and I have homeschooled our eight children, five girls and three boys, since our oldest was born in 2001. Now I teach other families' students: welding, sewing, reading, raising livestock, and growing a garden. Small workshops, real tools, real work. Come join us.

I've taught these workshops for over twenty years

Since 2002 I've been teaching enrichment workshops: welding, ag animals, ag plants, team building, computers. The workshops on this site are those same ones. Now we get to teach these fun workshops out of our own home.

All eight of our kids have been taught at home since 2001, and we have made most of the mistakes out there. So when your student turns up having never threaded a needle or touched a chicken, nobody here is surprised, and we're excited to share a new experience with them.

What a workshop actually looks like

Students get their hands on the real thing. In Applied Plant Science they prepare soil, sow seed, and transplant seedlings. In Applied Life Science they work with our livestock up close, which is why we tell them to wear shoes they'll be safe in. In Welding they cut and fabricate with a live torch, and they take the safety seriously because the equipment gives them a reason to.

Workshops stay small so I can know every student by name and see what each pair of hands is doing.

How we help

Group Workshops

Welding, raising livestock, growing plants, sewing, farm work, and Charlotte Mason mornings. Tuesdays through Thursdays, attendance capped small.

Reading Practice

A small reading group using Lindamood-Bell strategies. Most students start in Tutoring, where we do the LAC 3 assessment and begin lessons, then move into a group when one fits.

Tutoring

One student, one subject: the one that isn't clicking. You sit in on the session, so you and your student hear the same thing and you can reteach it at home.

Piano Lessons

Taught by an instructor with ten years of experience, for any age, whether your child is starting from nothing or already knows a few things.

Report Cards & Transcripts

Report cards for every grade and high-school transcripts, done right, so paperwork never holds your student back.

Local and charter-approved

We're in Tehachapi, CA, and The Headmaster and Me is an approved vendor for Heartland Charter School and Gorman Learning Charter Network and iLEAD Exploration. If your family is with Gorman or iLEAD, your instructional funds cover every workshop on this site. If you're with Heartland, they cover several of them, and each card says which.
