Applied Life Science

Animal systems, structure, behavior, and care, learned by working with our livestock. We get up close with farm animals, so wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Applied Plant Science

Soil, seed germination, propagation, and photosynthesis. We prepare soil, sow seeds, and transplant seedlings. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Farm Chores

Come learn the chores at Owens Farm. Students care for the animals and the garden by getting the day’s work done.

History of Westward Expansion

Living without electricity. What would you do, how would you cook? The pioneers who came across America worked hard and persevered. We try to replicate some of what they did to stay alive.

Welding

Grades 9–12 · Tuesdays, 3 hours weekly

A weekly three-hour introduction to fabricating, oxyacetylene cutting, and welding: shop safety, equipment, and technique. The materials fee is included. Students wear thick cotton pants and leather shoes, and buy their own welding hat, shirt, and safety glasses. Runs four months, August through November.

Jr. Welding

Grades 6–8 · Thursdays, 3 hours weekly

Sewing

Learn the basics of hand-sewing on the way to using a machine. It strengthens the eyes for tracking, which helps with reading, and builds hand coordination. Students measure, cut, and sew their own projects. The materials fee is included. Runs September through November and March through May.

Farm Hands

Be a farm hand at Owens Farm. Learn to use tools safely and get real jobs done: fixing, building, adjusting, painting, and lending a hand around the farm.

Team Building

All grades · Wednesdays (Sept–Nov)

Games that make us better teammates. Every player has a job to do, whether you were placed on a team or picked for one. Activities are outside, so dress for the weather and to be active.

Reading Practice

Grades 2–7 · Monday or Friday

$215 / month

A small group for struggling readers, using strategies consistent with Lindamood-Bell. Most students start in Tutoring, where we do the LAC 3 assessment and begin lessons, then move into a group when one fits. In the group we work on visualization, forming sounds, and left-brain, right-brain exercises. Groups meet Monday or Friday.

Tutoring

All grades · 45-minute sessions

$115 / session

Meet one-on-one with Mr. Owens for 45 minutes. The goal is to tutor your student without taking you out of the picture, so you can keep working together on the subject at hand.

Piano Lessons

All ages · By appointment

$200 / month

One-on-one piano lessons taught by an instructor with ten years of experience, adapted to each student’s age, personality, and skill level. Whether your child is just starting or already knows a few basics, lessons build good technique and confidence at the piano. Taught at Owens Farm.
